What types of classes do you offer?

When do you offer classes?

Classes are offered year-round in the morning and afternoon at our location in downtown Minneapolis. The school year is divided into winter, spring, summer and fall terms. Download the Term Calendar find out when the current term begins and ends, as well as when you can start taking classes.

Can I start a class after a term has already begun?

Yes, you can start taking a class after a term has already begun. See the Term Calendar and contact IEC to schedule an appointment.

How much does it cost to take classes?

There is no cost to take classes at the IEC.

We do require that students pay a $10 fee to help cover our paper costs.

Who can take classes at the IEC?

Classes are open to Minnesota residents age 17 and over who are not currently enrolled in high school.

Who teaches classes at the IEC?

IEC classes are taught by a team of dedicated and experienced adult English as a second language (ESL) and GED instructors. See our Teachers & Staff page for more information.

How do I register to take a class?

To register for class, you must call or email Student Services at to set up an appointment at our office. Appointments are scheduled Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. At your registration appointment, you will fill out paperwork and take a placement test. The appointment will take one to two hours.

Why do I have to take a placement test?

Placement tests help us determine your skill level. We use this information to decide if you should be in a beginner, intermediate or advanced level class.

What materials do I need to bring to class?

Please bring a notebook, binder and pencil to class.

How do I get to the IEC?

The IEC is located in downtown Minneapolis near Loring Park at 1128 Harmon Place. We are near the downtown campus of the University of St. Thomas and Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC).
